about

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is apparently from the 16th Century (not quite mediaeval but close enough). Early versions had the lyrics as "Sit you merry gentlemen". The historic meaning of the phrase God rest you merry is 'may God grant you peace and happiness'; the Oxford English Dictionary records uses of this phrase from 1534 onwards. It appears in Shakespeare's 1599 play "As You Like It"

I've arranged it in G minor, in CGDGAD tuning.

lyrics

God rest ye, merry Gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay,
For Jesus Christ our Saviour
Was born upon this Day.
To save poor souls from Satan's power,
Which long time had gone astray.
Which brings tidings of comfort and joy.[
